Joining Winsted Ambulance

(PDF reader software required)

Perhaps you have decided to join us. Perhaps you are just considering at this point. Either way, we're glad you're here now!

Joining an ambulance company is a serious commitment.
There are some things you need to know about us before we get to know you!

Winsted Area Ambulance Association, Inc. exists in order to:
a. provide emergency medical ambulance service to the residents of our primary service area;
b. provide emergency medical ambulance service to residents outside of our primary service area
     as necessary or according to our mutual aid plan;
c. provide emergency medical aid and ambulance service to area fire and police departments as requested; and
d. maintain a viable, trained and supporting membership.

Although we take volunteering seriously, you'll notice that it doesn't appear in the list above. What we do (emergency medicine) is more important than why we do it (volunteering)... We don't just give our time. We provide the highest quality prehospital emergency healthcare to the town of Winchester and its surrounding communities. This requires dedication and the ability to stay calm amid stressful and sometimes very trying circumstances. This work can be rewarding, but it can be difficult sometimes, and it requires varying degrees of training.

At a minimum, all applicants must be:
• of good moral character
• physically qualified and possess a driver's license
• qualified in the operation of an ambulance (training is mandatory)
• certified in CPR for the Professional Rescuer (or, we'll train you).

Winsted Area Ambulance Association has several types of membership reflecting the different roles and responsibilities of our members in order to realize our mission. We'll review the three most common types.

Full Members
We have limited openings for some positions, but generally, we can use drivers (whether you are an MRT or not), EMT-Basics, EMT-Intermediates, or EMT-Paramedics. (Because we are licensed at the EMT-Intermediate level, Paramedics will have a restricted scope of practice.) If you are an EMT from another state and are new to the area, we can also help you with your reciprocity paperwork when you join.

First Responder
Unlike Full Members, First Responders for Winsted Ambulance do not take shifts of call time. A First Responder is intended to arrive first at an emergency scene in order to render emergency care prior to the arrival of the ambulance, and to activate the EMS system if this has not already been done.

First Responders:
• Are at least certified as an MRT;
• Live in any town within the Corporation’s primary service area, excluding the city of Winsted, where the police department serves in a First Responder capacity;
• Respond as available, using good judgment on how far the call is from their location;
• Obey Corporation policies and state law at all times, especially with respect to speed limits and traffic lights;
Notify the responding ambulance or dispatch of any new pertinent information;
• Request additional resources as appropriate (Paramedic intercept, Lifestar);
• If an EMT, be able to ride with any responding ambulance crew to the hospital, should the need to form a legal crew arise (rare).

Exceptions to the "no non-police First Responders in Winsted" rule may be made by the Board of Directors on an individual basis. It's not common.

Explorer
Winsted Ambulance operates Explorer Post 162, which is focused on young adults age 14-21 who have an interest in emergency medicine and wish to decide if they want to enter into a career in EMS. The Explorer Post has its own unique governance structure.

We believe that if you've read this far, there's probably a place for you at Winsted Ambulance.

If you haven't already, read our FAQ here, and download and print the application above or stop by the garage (call 379-6596 first, we might be out on a call!).
